food for thought

my family has made some changes in our life…a determination to live greener…lighten our footprint…get back to basics and live simply. one of the biggest changes for us was food. i rediscovered my love for cooking and baking. we stopped buying processed, pre-packaged, and convenience foods. instead we filled our pantry with ingredients and i went back to cooking and baking from scratch using as many fresh and local ingredients as i possibly could! it has been fabulous!!! i LOVE the process…the creating…the smells…and the beautiful presentation when it’s done. it is it’s own art!

it makes for wonderful photo’s

i KNOW i drive my family nuts when i say…”WAIT!! nobody eat yet!!!” as i grab my camera and snap photo after photo. i hear the grumbling…”mom, i’m STARVING!!” LOL!

but the thing is…our choices to live this way has become an integral part of creating memories. i am not in the kitchen alone anymore…it has become a family event.  my kids love to help, they are a part of the process, and we have some favourites we make specifically because it allows us to spend time together. it’s good times!

we all know that food brings family together…we all gather in the kitchen…it’s the heartbeat of so many homes…why not document that?? my husband laughs cuz i take a thousand ( i swear it’s not an exaggeration!!) photo’s of food AND scrapbook it…but it’s so much more then the food i am scrapbooking. it’s the memories….the emotions…the moment…the occasion that surrounded that dish that i am scrapping. i always find it amazing just what we, as humans, recall to memory with food. a childhood dish…a favourite snack…a dessert to die for…it’s like an instant replay button in our heads and we recall every taste…emotion…detail of that place, day, occasion.

so document it!!

the next time the smell of a meal or the savouring bite of a dessert captures your attention…grab your camera…and tell the story!

have a fabulous day!
